“Melancholy”

Okay, so I love music. And when I say I love music, I mean all genres—apart from rock (sorry, rock fans). I love gospel, pop, hip-hop, AFROBEATTTTT!, amapiano, jazz, and so much more.

But melancholic music? That’s different. It just gets me. It hits the soul in a way that nothing else does.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate melancholic musicians like Adele, Aurora, Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, and so many more? Like, truly appreciate the art they create? Because it’s not just music, it is an experience.

Now, let me say this loud and clear: when I tell people I like melancholic music, they instantly think I mean sad music.

But IT’S NOTTT!

Yes, there’s some overlap. Yes, they might sound similar. But they’re not the same.

Sad music, which I also like, is more direct. It’s emotional, heavy, raw. The lyrics and rhythms are made to evoke pain or tragedy. A great example of that is Zevia. Their music feels like heartbreak wrapped in sound.

But melancholic music? It’s not that. It’s subtle. It’s reflective. It’s soothing. It’s beautiful.

It’s not always about sadness—it’s about introspection, nostalgia, and a quiet depth. It leaves you with this wistfulness, this soft sorrow, this deep longing. It doesn’t leave you feeling down. Instead, it makes you feel in touch with yourself, your thoughts, your emotions. Some like me might even say it’s comforting. Melancholic music lingers. It doesn’t cry. It just stays with you—in the background of your soul.

So, here are my top 5 melancholic songs right now. Enjoy them with your heart open:

  1. Chihiro – Billie Eilish.

  2. The Seed – Aurora.

  3. Beanie – Chezile.

  4. Young and Beautiful – Lana Del Rey.

  5. Set Fire to the Rain – Adele.

Let the music sit with you. Let it speak what words sometimes can’t.

Thanks for reading, Love.
